FAQ LABORATORY ANIMAL CENTRE (LAC)

SPECIES

1. What types of rat/mice species are available?

• Rat:

 Sprague Dawley (SD) rat

• Mice:

 ICR mice, Balb/c mice, and C57BL/6 mice.

PURCHASE OF ANIMAL

1. How to buy rats/mice in the facilities?

• Advance notice is needed for animal production. We breed depend on request which takes about 2 months and fill out the Animal Request Form.

2. Where to get Animal Request Form?

• On the website or email phm_ippp@um.edu.my

3. Does purchasing animals need UM IACUC approval?

• Not required.

4. Can outsiders buy animals from LAC and does UM IACUC is needed?

• Yes, outsiders can buy animals from LAC and UM IACUC is not required.

5. Does buying animals in LAC include transportation?

• Yes, if you are inside University of Malaya (UM) and the delivery charge applies. But if you are outside UM, we do not make deliveries and you must come to pick up the animals at our facility.

FACILITIES

1. How to do experiment in LAC?

• You need to get an approval from University of Malaya Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (UM IACUC) then fill out The Animal Experimental Form.

3. How to contact UM IACUC?

• You can apply through UmPortal or Contact  Secretariat UM IACUC, Puan Aufzalina Mohd Yusof, at 03-79677022 (ext: 2369) and UM IACUC website : https://umresearch.um.edu.my/institutional-of-animal-care-amp-use-commitee

4. Where is LAC located?

• LAC is located inside Ladang Mini ISB beside JPPHB.

5. What time does LAC operation hour?

• Monday – Friday (8.00 am – 5.00 pm)
• Saturday – Sunday (8.00 am – 1.00 pm)

6. Other services in LAC?

• Rental post-mortem table for surgery or short course.

7. Can outsiders or other University do experiments in LAC?

• Yes can. But you need to get collaborator in UM so that you can get UM IACUC approval.

1. How to pay animal bills?

• UM grants holder can pay using Internal Money Transfer to New Animal House: UM.0000033/HIP.IP
• Cashless payment can be made via E-pay: http;//epay.um.edu.my
